Say Goodbye to Shooting Leg Pain: Understanding Sciatica and How to Find Relief

As a Physiotherapist, I have treated many patients who come into the clinic worried about pain shooting down their leg. In many cases, the cause is Sciatica.

Sciatica is a type of pain that starts in your lower back and travels down your buttock and into one (sometimes both) leg. It happens when the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in your body, gets irritated or squeezed.

Trusted medical sources such as the Mayo Clinic and the National Health Service explain that sciatica is not a disease itself, but a symptom caused by pressure on a nerve in the lower back.

What Does Sciatica Feel Like?

From my clinical experience, people with sciatica often describe:

  • Pain that shoots down one leg

  • A burning or electric shock feeling

  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot

  • Weakness in the affected leg

  • Pain that gets worse when sitting for long periods

The pain can be mild and annoying, or strong enough to make walking and daily activities difficult.

Why Does Sciatica Happen?

Sciatica happens when something presses on a nerve in your lower spine. Common causes include:

  • A bulging or slipped disc (a cushion between your back bones pushing on a nerve)

  • Narrowing in the spine

  • Wear and tear from aging

  • Tight muscles in the buttock area pressing on the nerve

According to the Cleveland Clinic and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a slipped or bulging disc is one of the most common reasons people develop sciatica.

How Physiotherapy Helps

The good news is that most people with Sciatica improve with proper conservative treatment. In my practice, Physiotherapy focuses on:

  • Gentle exercises to reduce nerve irritation

  • Strengthening the core and back muscles

  • Improving posture and movement habits

  • Reducing muscle tightness

  • Teaching patients how to prevent flare ups

Every patient is different. That is why assessment and individualized treatment are important. With the right approach, many of my patients return to their normal activities without needing surgery.
